Adult's Testimonial

Yoga is not merely an exercise regime but a very powerful tool which has taught me to live my life to the fullest.

My journey started with a recommendation by a friend. Initially I was not sure if I wanted the commitment but I was persuaded to give it a try. Around the same time a Yoga camp was being organised and I too joined, initially to give myself a break from all the daily issues I was undergoing at the time.

The most powerful workshop was on Vedanta (Science of Life). We had a thought provoking discussion and I realised the dissatisfaction in my life was often associated with my perceptions and assumptions I formed using my thought process and emotions, which had an impact on my mood and subsequent behaviour.

The transformation was not overnight and often there were relapses with the thought process. However, according to the circumstances you need to reshape and focus on your goals. Every Yoga lesson retracts me to reality and I get energised and re-balance my thought process to continue my journey to achieve my goals. Over the past nine years Yoga has become part of my life.

I was introduced to Triveni Sangam (TS) yoga by a colleague of mine and my association with Manju Nagji; I call her Manju Di, started 4 years ago. Coming in contact with TS was the best thing that has happened in my life. Being in medical profession having busy life I needed grounding in my body, mind, emotions and spirit.

After coming in association with Manju Di my spiritual journey started along side with yoga. I have been blessed to have a teacher like Manju Di; she shares the wisdom of traditional yoga practice hand in hand with the practical application of it in our day to day life.

Yoga has helped me to enjoy and relax while exercising and progress on the path of spirituality.

I was introduced to Yoga class (Triveni Sangam) over ten years ago by our mutual Ayurveda practitioner because I had several physical problems like Backache, Asthma etc. I had very little understanding of yoga then. It was only hearsay from people that there are different yoga classes and they teach different methods like Bikram yoga, Hatha yoga etc.

I feel very blessed that I had chosen this yoga class. Yoga we learn is Patanjali Astang Yoga. The method and style used makes a lot of sense. We are taught to listen to our body’s ability and work with it through postures, stretches, breathing and meditation. The teachings are all based not only on the physical exercise (Body) but also breathing (Mind) and meditation (Soul). This has helped me tremendously over the years; I’ve become more flexible, calmer and my physical ailments have disappeared. I am a full time working mum with three grown up children and a husband; and I can categorically say that my journey in this phase would have been very hard without being part of this organisation

I have been attending fortnightly discussion classes since last four years and currently we are learning the teachings of Shrimad Bhagvad Gita. It is very interesting to apply this teaching in my personal life. It has given me the foundation to have personal discipline; being compassionate and truthful to myself and others.

During the last four years I’ve been taught how to do head massage, reflexology and body massage. The idea is to learn and share the knowledge to utilise it for the betterment of the needed. This nurtures the feeling of ‘nishkam seva’ (seva without expectations) which gives utmost satisfaction within you.

All the above with the correct discipline, postures, breathing , meditation, control of senses, concentration and the ultimate surrender to Divine is the complete package which is what makes the essence of true yogi. This is what we learn at Triveni Sangam.

Sunday 15th June 2003 was a very memorable day for me. That day, my late friend Chandrika and I met Manjuben for the first time. We, Shree Kadwa Patidar Samaj (KPS), were looking for Yoga teacher and are very fortunate and privileged to have had her as our yoga teacher for a number of years.

She has also been teaching Yoga to our young children at KPS Gujarati School for the past year on every Saturday and the children thoroughly enjoy her lesson especially Sun Salutations, reciting the prayers and singing.

She has taught us that yoga is not just physical exercise but also spiritual up-liftment and how they both are connected. Through Yoga, Pranayama and Meditation we improve not just our physical but also mental and spiritual health. In my experience this is something which is not taught in other yoga classes. She also shares her spiritual knowledge with her students through discussion classes on our scripture to give us deeper understanding of their meaning. She makes this interesting by adding Bhajans connected to the subject matter.

I have also attended two of her Residential Camps where my experience with Manjuben was unforgettable. There is a lot of depth in my thinking now and I question my actions which I previously did without thinking. She is not only our Yoga instructor but also a friend, mentor, counsellor and advisor.

I have been attending Yoga classes for the past 3 years. Working the Asanas with the correct breathing technique has not only made my body flexible but has given me the opportunity to listen to my body and work with it. Practicing Pranayama daily has helped me to overcome my anxiety and reduce stress levels. With Pritti’s recommendation I have been attending the discussion classes for over a year which has helped me change the course of my life for betterment of my soul and inner peace. As Manjuben says “Krishna can be our charioteer but we have become Arjun first”, it is difficult but with self discipline and a clear conscious one can.

A family friend had recommended Triveni Sangam’s yoga classes to me 12 years ago and I have now become a part of it. Initially I noticed physical changes; I was a little more toned and lost a little weight. Over time I also experienced spiritual and personal growth. I started attending the discussion classes and found a deeper meaning to spirituality and my personal journey. The meditation also helped with my Reiki practice as I could tune into the other person easily.

My husband started attending the classes after he noticed that although he was physically fit, his body was not flexible. He then suffered from a condition called Dystonia and yoga gave him the mental strength to cope with the condition. During this time I became pregnant and continued with simple Asanas and prayers throughout the pregnancy. My son is now almost 7 years old and he will not sleep until we have recited the prayers. We are now a happier calmer and contended family.

Before joining Triveni Sangam I used to go to Hatha yoga class but a friend of mine introduced me to Triveni Sangam yoga class 10 years ago and I’m really enjoying yoga because the instructor is very approachable and knowledgeable.

Physically I feel more energised; I can concentrate better and don’t have to take any medication. Mentally I feel much calmer and peaceful. At times we also learn about different alternative therapies, recently we learned about pressure points and head massage. All this helps us to understand our body and how it functions.

My experience of residential yoga camp was most amazing which I’ll never forget and how can I forget our trip to Bournemouth to do ‘Yoga on the Beach’?

Every week when I go to Yoga class it’s like recharging my batteries and meeting classmates is an added bonus. We all gel together so well, it’s like meeting an extended family.

I discovered Triveni Sangam yoga around 15 years ago after hearing of the classes through a close friend of mine. I was facing a very low point in my life and was at a major crossroad.

Yoga helped me to focus and put a perspective on what my circumstances were at the time. I was able to establish a routine which incorporated yoga pranayama and meditation so it became and still is an everyday part of my life.

I suffered from back problems, fatigue, stress, low self esteem and poor diet. Yoga has enabled me to manage these conditions in a positive and holistic way without having to rely on any medication.

I also attend Triveni Sangam discussions on the Gita and I feel it goes hand in hand with yoga as a way of life and understanding. In addition I volunteer with the children classes Saturdays. This is one way of giving up my free time to help others, Nishkam Seva.

I would highly recommend Triveni Sangam yoga. Anyone regardless of your age, gender, background and beliefs are made most welcomed. Yoga is not just an exercise but it is an essential part of everyday living.

I have been attending yoga and discussion classes for the last four years. In 2010 I was diagnosed with having anxiety and was thinking of going on medication. Fortunately I was talking to Jentibhai, one of her students, at my daughter’s swimming classes and asked him if he knew any yoga teachers who taught one to one. He told me about Manjuben Nagji but unfortunately he didn’t have her number with him at the time. I googled her name and contacted her on the same day.
I told her about my problem and asked if I could be helped. Manjuben gave me four one to one lessons on breathing exercises listened to my worries and fears. She immediately taught me how to do breathing exercises (Pranayama) for my panic attacks. She encouraged me to attend yoga and discussion classes. She also told me that I can phone her and have a chat with her any time I felt anxious.
Manjuben’s Triveni Sangam yoga classes have really helped me a lot, in particular:

  • I am a much calmer person through practicing Pranayama and meditation.
  • I feel more energised.
  • My thinking is more positive, I analysing my thoughts, my actions, reactions and my motives.
  • My blood pressure has come down.
  • My weight loss problem has disappeared.

Through Manjuben’s discussion classes on spirituality I have also realised that there is so much to learn about ourselves, the nature and in general the world around us. During each visit to the class, I come home feeling more positive and confident. My anxiety, depression and fears have reduced significantly and I have got my ‘zing’ back into my life! I am a much better person now. I am still learning and there is a long way to go but I do not allow minor issues to upset me.
I have also made friends with like minded people; we do hanuman Chalisa, Janamastami, Bhajans, go out for a meal which has all helped me recover. I now read more spiritual books to help me improve myself.
My daughter, who also attends yoga classes, and I had counselling from Manjuben and as a result:

  • Our relationship is much better than it was, we are more like friends now
  • My daughter listens to me more where as previously we would argue
  • My daughter eats more healthy food now.
  • Improvement in our relationship has reduced both our stress levels.

I have been attending Triveni Sangam adult yoga classes for more than 5 years now. To me it’s more than just a yoga class! I look forward to coming as everyone is warm and very friendly. As you walk into class you can feel the energy and easily become part of this extended family.

Over the years I have attended many activities organised by Triveni Sangam (TS) including Annual Shows where the sense of family was felt very much with a gathering of over 300 people and where TS yoga students (young children, people with learning difficulties and adults) have had the opportunity to perform on stage.

Over the last 2 years a team of us have been helping Manjuben with the children’s yoga class on Saturday mornings. It is a real privilege to have this opportunity to learn from Manjuben how to teach yoga to young children and to see how the children grow and develop each week. Seeing Manjuben explain the yoga routine or the meaning of the prayers to the children is inspiring; in fact I as an adult learn more about yoga and its deeper meaning.

In August I went to Bournemouth with Triveni Sangam group for Yoga on the Beach. This was a truly magical experience doing yoga in the fresh air with sound of the sea waves and in the fun company of yoga students. I really felt connected with my body, mind and soul which is the true essence of learning Yoga with Triveni Sangam.
